The Lycians, who appear in Homer's Iliad,  came to Turkey's coastal areas before 1000 B.C.E.  Speakers of Luwian, a language related to Hittite, the Lycians later formed a league of 23 city-states.  Over time, the Lycians became more Hellenized, and switched to the Greek language.
